Chairman Ball and members of the County Council: The Howard County League of Women Voters supports CB-11-2011. We appreciate Howard County's commitment to using existing untapped resources to supply energy in such a method that has a positive impact on the environment. The League's support is based on the National League's position on the environment protection and pollution control which calls for the preservation of the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the ecosystem. The specific approach is one of problem solving. We applaud this innovative project that will make use of gas that is currently being burned off as a safety measure. The recaptured product will not only supply sufficient energy for the site but will have the capability to produce energy for others through the PJM regional service area. The League appreciates, as well, that the methane gas displaces the consumption of other fuels, including coal, oil or natural gas. The League urges the Council to support Council Bill 11-2011.
